The Sixth Finger

Last time I wanted to blog was some 2 months back on  above mentioned topic. The plane reason was that I was waitlisted in 3 important finals of Inter B School competitions. Whether the organizers were a Mumbai based PE firm or a public sector  Venture Capitalists or an International body of CFAs they have the common denominator: the affinity for 5.All the three organizers selected top 5 and I was the Sixth guy.

The genesis of the tradition of selecting top 5 lies in the millions year old history of evolution of mankind. Humans have 5 fingers so when ever they  need to shortlist we go for a number easily countable and what could be more easy than counting 5 using fingers. This hangover from past had taken toll on me. Just think.. You wake up and open the inbox and just watch out your name on the first slot of waitlisted candidate then it really pinches. It really culls your spirit of competition if happens three times in a matter of 2 days.

If I analyse the number 6, I found it, highly under-rated. The Sixth sense has no proven biological existence. The Sixth Day was a day of anihilation in the Old Testament. In modern popular culture, 666 is one of the most widely recognized symbols for the Antichrist or, the Devil.Only the Chinese culture percieves it as lucky number.Mathematicians would appreciate- it is the smallest Perfect Number but it has never got its worth. Except Cricket and Ludo, no sports celebrates Six.

To me, Six is the under dog, he is an under achiever who never gets his due. Six is a rebel, an out cast. Six  is  nobody, a destiny's child, a shophomore. Six is an witty out-sider who doesnot follow the herd, he is the person who thinks out-of -box. Six is an avante-garde,someone who dares and doesnot care much about the estsablished notions if these are based on hypocrisy. Six is the John Galt may be or the gamester "Who doesnot play for the money he wins, he doesn't play for respect" (quoting Sting's song). Who play for playing not for winning. Winning is highly over rated, isn't it? Just leaving you here with this thought for some time...for Six days may be.:)

Generalization...

I expected you to be the exception to all the rules :D and not generalize things to give excuses.

You think a horoscope prediction given for a zodiac sign will be applicable for everyone under that umbrella.

I am let say no 5, i would claim that only there is a winner, runner up and second runner up. so what ever you said is applicable to 3 and not 5.

Thanks Karan , Rohit, Shantanu and Amy..
@ Amy: My hypotheses has no horoscopic underpinning. It has its root as said before in the evolution . genralization is not a sin if you have reasons to support that. But there are always exceptions and i cant deny that.

About your second argument:
5 is a threshold and so a roadblock for inclusion( lets say in some final list or sthing), But on the other hand 2 or 3 is roadblock in the path of award or recognition.. It is not as disassociative( hypocritic) as 5 is..
